I had an awesome experience during my recent visit to Dubai with JW Marriott Marquis Dubai. This blue look was my fav during my Desert Safari trip. I added color, was modest and rocked my interpretation of the fashion in Dubai. Be it on the hotel property or in the malls, I was very respectful of the various cultural differences. Not only were there cultural differences, it was the week leading up to Ramadan. So, I did my best to show respect.
Yes, there were women and men running around the city in questionable, less modest attire even with all of that, I would still not take that as a ticket to join in. Based on my experience in 2012, I knew exactly what I needed to pack. I thought I would share 5 essential pieces to bring with you to Dubai.
5 Essentials to Pack for Dubai
Long scarf. I wore a headscarf everyday. Along with the modesty ideals in Dubai, there was so much sand and dust from construction, my hair had to be covered. I also used this scarf to cover myself when I went to places when other people were covered. I took a black, tan and red scarf and they were versatile enough for me to really get wear out of them and be comfortable while protecting my hair.
Long Black Skirt. I took a skirt that my mom made for me about 15 years ago and I am sohappy that I did. I wore it almost everyday while in Dubai. While it is super hot, I would not wear shorts in Dubai and felt the skirt made me blend it. It was a lovely skirt that made me feel shapely and feminine without being smoking hot. Pun intended. Ha!
Sandals. No runners or heels. Runners are a bit to hot and get dusty and heels are just torture in the heat. Get a great pair of sandals that are super comfy and wear them. I wore sandals everyday. I thought I would be wearing more heels but not with the crazy sun. The sandals helped me get through the heat and all of the sightseeing.
Sunnies. You. Will. Need. Sunnies! The brightness of the sun in Dubai is nothing like I have ever experienced and it doesn’t stop. Be prepared with a few pairs of sunglasses to protect your eyes and to keep away the headaches. Sunglasses are also super chic. I saw so many women who wear Hijab with sunnies on and they looked fab.
Tote Bag. When you are walking through the streets of Dubai you are going to want to carry water, a towel, sunnies, drinks etc with you. I would opt for a tote bag. At least you will have everything you need with you at all times. For dinner ( at the end of the day) I wore a clutch but during the day, I killed my Celine Phantom tote everyday.
Everyday I was in Dubai, I took as a challenge to create a modest, fashionable look and I think I did a great job. Well I am also a fashion person so I know how to really curate a fun yet modest look.

Tips on What to Wear in Dubai
- Try to blend in but stand out with a fun accessory. Be it a bright bag or funky sunnies.
- If you are think it won’t fly, don’t wear it. If you have to second guess a piece that you want to wear don’t wear it.
- Look around and see what other people are wearing. This gives you an indication of that is acceptable.
- I think there is two types of attire: hotel attire and outside the hotel attire. Ha! Inside the hotel ie. poolside you can wear less modest pieces because you are poolside but I wouldn’t wear my pool wear outside the property of the hotel.
