Mexico is one of my favorite countries to visit. It is definitely on my top 5 list of destinations for a getaway. I have visited Cozumel, Cancun and Los Cobos. Never visited Tulum. I’ve heard so many great things about the town and was excited to experience it for myself. I’ve seen all of the beautiful pictures on Instagram and knew it would be a memorable destination.
First reaction to the town: Tulum is the future. Every corner is picture perfect. The food is healthy and fresh. There were so many meal options for vegans and vegetarians. I was also taken back by all of the elements of design from interior design to fashion design. Tulum is the home of creativity.
Despite everything I had seen and heard about Tulum I had no idea what I was going experience. What I witnessed with my own two eyes in Tulum helped me reimagine what the future would look like if we actually protected the planet. In this blog post I will share my experience in Tulum and suggestions. I hope they help you while planning yours.
What To Wear in Tulum
If you are into boho chic Tulum is the best place for you. Everyone is wearing harem pants, bikini tops, hats with feathers, and it’s really amazing to see a new take on beach fashion which is more covered then bikini focused. During the day I wore denim shorts, crop tops and no makeup. Tulum is about natural beauty so I let my skin shine through. At night I put on my maxi dresses and leather slides paired with my designer bags. Tulum is very hot so make sure you have a sun hat sunscreen and your favorite skin mist to use during the day and at night. Oh and don’t forget bug spray!
Where to Enjoy The Beach In Tulum
Tulum is known for its beaches. I spent many hours on the beach, in a cabana, sipping pina coladas, and eating guac. The beaches were the highlight of my trip. When I am on vacation relaxation is my primary focus so a cabana is the only way I beach. The cabana scene in Tulum is different and next level. First of all, if you purchase food you get a cabana for free. Yass! That made it easy to spend more time on the beach without paying crazy prices for a cabana. There’re many options all along the beach shorelines. The beaches have many options for cabanas from super high-end rates to regular price. Either way you can still enjoy the beaches regardless of the price you pay.
Where To Shop in Tulum
Shopping is everywhere in Tulum. I was amazed by the beautiful furniture pieces and handcrafted works of art. From hammocks to birdcages, I wanted to bring them all back home with me for a new special project I am working on. I purchased pom poms and handmade name tags made by the locals. Basically vendors will come with their wears to your cabana and you can purchase items on the beach. Most vendors accept credit card but it’s really handy to keep some pesos or US dollars on hand. And don’t forget to tip. I loved tipping for great service. I never felt like the services below in Tulum so it was easy to give a little extra to the staff.
I did not go to a big shopping mall in Tulum but I did visit the Dior boutique nestled in a treehouse.
What To Do In Tulum
Tulum known for its vibrant nightlife including festivals, dinner parties, and clubs. I spent a lot of my evenings at restaurants enjoying the beautiful scenery and decadent menus on the Tulum beach street aka QR15. I loved the cocktails in Tulum. Each restaurant and bar mixed their own culture with traditional drinks as well as traditional food. Don’t forget to eat as many tacos as you can as well as quesadillas. You can also spend your time walking up and down the strip meeting people, trying to speak the language, and enjoy all of the picture perfect moments that Tulum has to offer.
Where To Stay in Tulum
I know Instagram has convinced you to stay at a hotel in Tulum but an AirBnB is just as perfect. There are so many AirBnb in Tulum. I must say I was a bit hesitant about not staying at a hotel at first. Hotels are usually my first choice for accommodations because they have security. I travel with many valuables and my biggest concern is my valuables jewelry and watches will not be safe. A hotel is always my first choice but Tulum proved to be very safe and the AirBnbs just as beautiful as a hotel. AirBnbs are also much more inexpensive yet extremely Instagram worthy, clean and well maintained. If you’re going to visit Tulum, spent some time finding an AirBnb that is exactly what you need for your trip.
