My skin has gone through so many stages. Good, bad, smooth, bumpy. I remember one time I looked at my face and was amazed. I looked like what I like to call, “ a pizza face”. My skin was so bumpy, oily and scarred. I wanted to cry but instead I headed to the Internet for info.
Ironically there was an event being held at Ritual salon in Toronto, showing Dermalogica. I decided to attend to see if Dermalogica products could do anything for me. I sat through the presentation and at the end, spoke to the consultant about what would work well for my skin. Interestingly enough she said my skin was dry and needed moisture.
She suggested I use two products, a toner and a microexfoliant. I walked over to the cashier who rang up the products. The price almost stopped me from taking them home but inside I felt like I needed them. Upon arriving at home, I used them right away.
The next morning my mother saw me and commented on how much better my skin looked. Looking closer at my skin, there was difference. I was stunned.
My skincare process is simple. I still use Dermalogica products available at salons but I also use products you can purchase from Wal-mart or the pharmacy. My routine is built around:
- Makeup Removal
- Cleansing
- Exfoilation
- Toner
- Moisture
Makeup Removal
Because I wear makeup frequently, it is important to remove all of my makeup thoroughly. I never go to bed with my make up on. It’s a complete no no.
To remove my makeup, I use:
Pond’s face wipes: These make- up wipes are very well designed. One side is textured and the other side is smooth. The rough side gives you a quick micro exfoliante experience while the smooth side is soft and gentle. I use these every night or when I come home from being out.
Abolene: I ordered this product online and use it with a cotton pad after a long night with heavy makeup and dancing. This product is similar to a face butter with moves smoothly over your skin while wiping off all of your makeup.
Neutrogena all in one makeup removal wipes: I travel with these wipes as they are easy to pull out of my bag and gently removes my makeup and any products on my skin. They are quick, clean and effective. The price is also right!
Cleansing
Cleansing my skin is the most relaxing part of my skin routine. I swear by Neutrogena oil- free face wash. It removes any lurking makeup, adds moisture and makes my skin super clean.
My mother- in-law (she is the best) got me one of the Skinvigorate face cleansing brush by Mary Kay and I also use this once a week to deeply cleanse my skin. The brush is so soft and luxurious. I add a dab of my Neutrogena oil-free face wash to the brush, turn it on and let it get to work. It is definitely worth it to own one.
Exfoliation
It is not until recently did I really begin exfoliating. This really helps remove the grime and dead skin cells on your face. However, when selecting an exfoliant make sure that it does contain any beads or stones that may cut your skin leading to scarring.
My favorite microfoliant is by Dermalogica which uses rice instead of what sometimes feels like chipped up stones. Ekk. I also love Vasanti Brighten Up! – Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
microfolitant with no parabens, paypaya and no stony grainy feeling.
I do not use an exfoilant everyday but twice a week. It can be too harsh on your skin but is necessary if you want to fully a glowy look rather than dull skin.
Toner
Sometimes toner is ignored but it is an essential part of skincare. Toner tightens the skin while refreshing your pores. I also love the tingling feeling it leaves on my skin. Toner restores the pH of your skin after cleansing with a soap or facewash.
I use my Dermalogica toner twice a week. I lightly spray the mist all over my face and neck and let it dry on my skin. Stylist and mogul June Ambrose suggested using Vodka a toner. I haven’t tried it yet but just may have to test it out.
Moisture
Your body needs moisture and that includes your skin. Along with drinking litres of water per day, I prefer to use handmade, natural, organic moisturizers. To moisturize my skin on my body and my face, I use Coconut oil. My skin does get extremely dry but coconut oil is a lovely light oil and provides great moisture for dewy glowing skin.
In the winter, I layer my face with Rose Gold Whipped Vanilla Shea, made in Toronto. This butter keeps the moisture in, makes my skin smooth and my husband loves the scent. It can also double as a hair butter.
