I have been to Trinidad & Tobago many times but this recent trip was full of relaxation and food. If you were following along on my Instastories, you would have seen my fun day in my Aunt’s plant sanctuary and my beach bum day. Relaxation was so needed with my move and the workload of my blog. Sigh.
In between the relaxation, I was able to experience the fun, food and festivities Trinidad & Tobago offers. I even made a video for you all but will share it in a few days. To give you a recap of the things I did while in Trinidad, I compiled a list of the top 10 things to do when you visit Trinidad & Tobago:
When you get to airport, to the left of the airport building is a local food court. Head over there and order yourself some doubles and aloo pies. These are Trini street foods, filled with curry flavor and a smooth texture. Grab a Red Solo (soda) and your are immediately a true Trini! Movie Towne is a complex in Woodbrook, centered around a movie theatre. You will also find a wide variety of restaurants, including Rizzoli’s Italian restaurant, Hagen- Daz Ice Cream and even Starbucks is set to open in 2017. Movie Towne is not only about movies but the liming ( hanging out) experience and mostly food. Arima is a borough in Trinidad where my family is from. Arima was all I knew until I grew older and discovered POS, which is the capital of Trinidad and it the hub of the country. Right around the savannah (square) in Arima there is a small ice cream shop, B’ s Ice Cream. I went there and devoured a scoop of pineapple and coconut Icecream. Homemade. Inexpensive. Yummy. Also in Arima, there is a local Roti spot called Homes Roti. Yes it is another Roti shop but they offer so many tasty sides. Stew pumpkin, cabbage and curry mango to name a few. I consider Fredrick Street in POS to be the Yonge street of Trinidad and Tobago. It is full of hustle and bustle, great deals, street food and fresh fruits and veggies. If you go in to the Excellence Stores centre you will find Linda’s, a small bakery with the best cream puffs stuffed with cheese. Head back to Fredrick street to pick up handmade slippers, calabash bags and the perfect nude stockings from Micel’s |
If you can’t make it over the mountain to Maracas beach, you can go to the beaches in Tobago. Tobago is the sister island to Trinidad and it has it’s own type of beauty and elegance. I enjoyed my day pass at Coco Reef Resort which included breakfast, lunch and dinner as well access to the private beach, towels and pina coladas. The food was not local but the dinner options were decadent with offerings including steak, lamb chops and lobster.
There are many malls in Trinidad but my upmost favorite is the recently renovated Trinicity Mall. You can find all of my favorite stores and snacks there. On the “new side” of Trinicity mall there is grocery store called Tru Value with a bakery inside. They have donuts, sausage rolls and currant rolls. You will also find the newly added MAC cosmetics and a great sushi spot. On the old side of Trinicity mall there are even more local food options including macaroni pie, sheppard pie, callaloo, fried fish and cassava dumplings.
The last place you have to visit in Trinidad is the Hyatt Regency. Not only are the grounds beautiful and modern, the breakfast spread is the perfect equilibrium of local and continential food. You will find traditional Trini Breakfast foods like smoke Herrin and coconut bake along with Smoked Salmon and Croissants. After eating breakfast, lounge by the pool and look at the boats on the water.
