What I Wore: Black Beauty Brunch

I challenged myself to wear something from my closet to the Black Beauty Brunch and I was NOT successful. Looking in my closet I couldn’t find anything that was weather appropriate. Some days it’s summer and some times it’s full Christmas! * Cues
“We wish you a Merry Christmas”*.

I decided to take the surprisingly easier way out and make a dress. I ran over to Queen Street and saw this awesome printed fabric. It was a subdued, floral with that gem tone pink. Just as quickly as I wanted to purchase the fabric, I quickly didn’t want to buy it because of the cost of the fabric. I am kinda a fabric snob. I only like paying around $5-$10 per metre/yard but this fabric was $25 per yard. Talk about over budget! I picked it up anyway and went home very upset that I broke the budget. More on budgets later!

With my three yards of fabric I headed home to sew. I only had 4 hours between all the fun projects I am working on, going to various dinners and taking care of my husband. But I was able to whip this, shoulder bearing, Jackie O inspired, brunch appropriate gown. It was the perfect fabric, the perfect design, the perfect silhouette.

In the past couple of months, this silhouette has been my go to for events, semiformal or formal. It is a great design that ascentuates my waist, shoulders and the flare of the skirt is very charming.
TIP: Always go for the look that suits you and makes you look your best.

One of the trends this season is bare shoulders but I put my own spin on it with this off the shoulder bandeau type design. The stiffness of the fabric really makes a difference not only how it is made but how it looks. It gives the dress shape, hold and character.

I paired this dress with my go to bag my vintage Maxi Chanel with gold hardware. It was a toss up between my favorite 100mm Christian Louboutin Pigalles or my 120mm Royal Purple Christian Louboutin So Kates. But the defining factor is always how long I would be standing. MAJOR Key! I chickened out and wore my  Pigalles ( I really love them) to the event.

There were so many powerful women who shared words of wisdom. Blogger @Askproy was a great colourful host that engaged the audience with each word.  I was so honoured to be one of the speakers along with Annika Reid of The Stylish Reid who spoke about body positivity.  Annika explained the purpose for the body positive community and its misconceptions. Karlyn Percil of  Sister Talk was exceptional and encouraged us to really seize every moment. Vivian, the Queen of Kank looked lovely in her colourful printed skirt peplum set. She reminded us that with little we can make much!
Some other Noteable attendees included:

Fabfourfashion
Chivon John
Dj Lissa Monet
How She Hustles
Samantha Clarke

My talk focussed on how I merged fashion, faith and travel. Wish you were all there to hear how I did it. My friends TK and B from StylesbyKnight were in the audience cheering me on! They are always a great time.
