I love being black. I love my black hair. I love my afro. There is so much beauty in being a black woman. PHEW! Black hair is a passion of mine so when I was asked to join Pekela Riley for a fireside chat about the art of engineering and Black hair hosted by Blavity’s AfroTech team, the answer was YES. AfroTech partnered with Dyson to bring black women together during Black History month to discuss the tech behind the Dyson Supersonic and Dyson AirWrap. We also celebratef the launch of the new wide tooth comb attachment.
The fireside chat event was held at the Dyson flagship store in San Francisco. I sat alongside Global Director of Mizani Hair and Dyson ambassador Pekela Riley. My experience as a biochemist really came in handy and I shared how the science behind the Dyson Supersonic impacts black hair care. I had questions for Pekela as well. Pekela has so much experience with working and designing beautiful black hair so I took the opportunity to learn from her. We talked all things black hair from products to having different hair textures on the same head.
Girl! We went in.
Before the event I spent weeks learning about Dyson’s technology and why it is the future of black hair.
Here are 3 reasons why the Dyson Supersonic is the future of black hair:
Controlled Heat
You know when you are blow drying your hair and the temperature of the blow dryer keeps increasing right? Well the Dyson Supersonic only goes up to 300 degrees and goes not increase beyond the set temperature. The Dyson Supersonic’s technology signals the temperature monitor and the prevents it from raising beyond the temperature you select. This helps you better control the temperature and protect your hair from heat damage.
Airflow Technology
Okay so when you wash your laundry and leave it out to airdry in your home, it dries. But does it dry faster when you hang it on a line in your backyard? Yes! That is the power of airflow. Because the air is blowing on your clothing, it dries faster even if the sun is not shining.
Dyson is known for its airflow technology. While the Supersonic is adding controlled heat to your hair it is also using the air pressure to further dry your hair. The combination of airflow and controlled air dries you hair faster and safer.
Smaller Motor And Less Weight
Dyson really thought about this one. After I blowdry my hair my arms feel achy. The majority of blowdryers have the motor ( about the size of an apple) at the top of the blowdryer which makes it bulky and super heavy. The Supersonic’s motor is a little smaller than a chocolate chip cookie. It is super small and it is located in the handle of the Supersonic thus balancing the weight. Major perk of the Supersonic.
There were also seven black hairstylists on site to demonstrate how the Dyson machines work on black hair. I met so many of my followers, my friends were in attendance, and most of all I had the opportunity to share my story. I was so grateful to speak to a group of Black women on how I took a chance on myself and won.
From my research and hosting this dialogue, I have concluded that Dyson’s technology is the future of black hair. That is the scientist in me talking. If we are dedicated to black hair health then Dyson’s technology has our back.
